The data presented below shows the providers that offer the GCSE and A level computer science qualifications in computer science by pupil premium decile. Pupil premium refers to students who have received free school meals within the last 6 years. To do this analysis we looked at the pupil premium provision in state schools and placed schools into ten groups, with group 1 representing schools with the lowest rate of pupil premium, i.e. schools serving the wealthiest student base. The data for each year shown uses the pupil premium data for that year. It should be noted that grammar schools make up a large proportion of the schools serving the wealthiest communities.
96.3 % of schools in the wealthiest decile offered computer science GCSE. Amongst the schools in the poorest decile provision was only 60.2 %.
Schools serving richer communities have seen increasing provision, whilst schools in the poorest decile have seen provision drop from 68.8 % in 2019/20 to 60.2 % in 2022/23.
For A level there is a similar picture with 83.4 % of schools in the wealthiest decile offering computer science GCSE compared to 31.8 % of schools in the poorest decile.
